Namo tassa bhagavato arahato sammā sambuddhassa

18. 2. 1.

(11) Kupe nimuggo Paradāriko –– A Man Going to Other Men’s Wives Immersed in a Pit

1. At one time the Blessed One was living in the squirrels’ sanctuary in the bamboo grove in Rajagaha.

2. At that time venerable Lakkhaṇa and venerable Mahāmoggallāna were living in the peaks of the Gijjha rock.

3. Venerable Mahāmoggallāna wearing robes in the morning and taking bowl and robes approached venerable Lakkhaṇa.

4. Approaching said to venerable Lakkhaṇa: “Friend, Lakkhaṇa let us enter Rajagaha for alms.” Venerable Lakkhaṇa said: “Yes friend.”

5. Venerable Mahāmoggallāna while descending from the Gijjha peak, smiled at a certain spot.

6. Then venerable Lakkhaṇa said to venerable Mahāmoggallāna: “Friend, Moggallāna, for what reasson did you smile?”

“Friend, Lakkhaṇa, this is not the right time to ask that question. Ask that question in the presence of the Blessed One.”

7. Then venerable Lakkhaṇa and venerable Mahāmoggallāna went the alms round in Rajagaha. After partaking the meal and returning from the alms round approached the Blessed One, worshipped and sat on a side.

8. Sitting on a side venerable Lakkhaṇa said to venerable Mahāmoggallāna: “Friend Moggallāna, when descending from the Gijjha peak you smiled at a certain spot, for what reason did you smile?”

9. “Friend, when I was descending the Gijjha peak, I saw a man immersed in a pit of excreta together with his head.

10. Friend, then it occurred to me: ‘Indeed it is wonderful and surprising to see a being, a non-human, a gain of self like this.’

11. Then the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: “Bhikkhus, the disciple should live wisely with aroused knowledge, when he knows, sees or witnesses such a thing.

12. Bhikkhus, in the past I saw this being, yet I did not tell it to anyone. If I had told, others would not believe me and it would be for their ill being and unpleasantness for a long time.

13. Bhikkhus, this person was an adulterer in this same Rajagaha. As a result of that action he suffered in hell for many years, for many hundreds of years, for many thousands of years, for many hundred thousands of years. And as a result of that action suffers having gained that self

(12) Gūtakhadi-Duṭṭha Brahmano –– An Evil Brahmin Eating Excreta

(Repeat sutta 18. 2. 1. substituting as follows:)

9. … When descending the Gijjha peak I saw a man immersed, together with the head in a pit of excreta, eating excreta with both his hands …

13. … this being was a Brahmin in this same Rajagaha during the dispensation of the rightfully enlightened Blessed One Kassapa. He invited the bhikkhus and filled excreta in a trough and said: ‘Good Ones eat and carry away as much as you. like.”’

(13) Nicchavitthi; Aticarini –– A skinned Woman; An Adulteress.

9. … When descending the Gijjha peak I saw a skinned woman moving in space and she was followed and attacked by vultures, crows and hawks and they pull a piece from her and divide it among them and she gives a cry of distress …

13. … She was an adulteress in this same Rajagaha …

(14) Maṅgulitthi Ikkhanitthi –– Fortune Teller

9. … When descending the Gijjha peak I saw a woman with the vital spots prominent moving in space and she was followed and attacked by vultures, crows and hawks and they pull a piece from her and divide it among them and she gives a cry of distress …

13. … She was a fortune teller in this same Rajagaha …

(5) Okilini; Sapatthangārakokiri –– An Outcaste Woman; Putting Charcoal on Co-Wives

9. … When descending the Gijjha peak I saw a woman scorched by throwing burning charcoal moving in space and she was followed and attacked by vultures, crows and hawks and they pull a piece from her and divide it among them and she gives a cry of distress …

13. … bhikkhus she was the chief queen of the king of Kalinga and she put the co-wives in a charcoal urn.

(16) Sīsachinno; Coraghatako –– Executioner of Robbers; Without a head

(Repeat sutta 18. 2. 1. substituting as follows:)

9. … When descending the Gijjha peak I saw a body without the head moving in space, his eyes and mouth were in the chest and he was followed and attacked by vultures, crows and hawks and they pull a piece from him and divide it among them and he gives a cry of distress …

13. … he was an executioner of robbers by the name Hariko in this same Rajagaha …

(17) Bhikkhu –– A Monk

9. … When descending the Gijjha peak I saw a monk, his double lined robe was blazing, bowl was blazing, belt was blazing and his body too was blazing and he gives a cry of distress …

13. … he was an evil monk in the dispensation of the rightfully enlightened Blessed One Kassapa.

(18) Bhikkhuni –– A Bhikkhuni

9. … When descending the Gijjha peak I saw a bhikkhuni, her double lined robe was blazing, bowl was blazing, belt was blazing, and her body too was blazing and she gives a cry of distress …

13. … she was an evil bhikkhuni in the dispensation of the rightfully enlightened Blessed One Kassapa.

18. 2. (9) Sikkhamānā –– One Observing the Precepts

9. … When descending the Gijjha peak I saw an observer of the precepts, her double lined robe was blazing, bowl was blazing, belt was blazing and her body too was blazing and she gives a cry of distress …

13. … she was an evil one observing the precepts in the dispensation of the rightfully enlightened Blessed One Kassapa.

(20) Samanera –– One Training to be a Monk

9. … When descending the Gijjha peak I saw a trainee monk, his double lined robe was blazing, bowl was blazing, belt was blazing and his body too was blazing and he gives a cry of distress …

13. … he was an evil trainee monk in the dispensation of the rightfully enlightened Blessed One Kassapa.

(21) ––Samaneriyo –A Trainee Bhikkhuni

11. Then the Blessed One addressed the monks: “Monks, the disciple should live wisely with aroused knowledge, when he knows, sees or witnesses such a thing.

12. “Monks, in the past I saw this being, yet I did not tell it to anyone. If I had told, others would not believe me and it would be for their ill being and unpleasantness for a long time.

13. “Monks, this trainee bhikkhuni led an evil life during the dispensation of the Blessed One Kassapa. As a result of that action she suffered in hell for many years, for many hundreds of years, for many thousands of years, for many hundred thousands of years. And as a result of that action suffers having gained that self.”
