Sayadaw Dr. K Dhammasami
Blessed is the arising of the fully self-awakened ones, Buddhas.
Blessed is their teaching of the middle path to peace.
Blessed is the understanding in the community who follow it.
Blessed is the dedicated practice of the harmonious community.
The Buddhist festival of Vesak, marked by the full moon of the lunar month of Vesak, usually in may, celebrates the Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and passing into final nirvana at death. In December 1999, the United Nations General Assembly recognised this as an international holiday, and this book may be considered as a development from this recognition. This appreciation spurred the Buddhist world to come together to celebrate Vesak, first in 2000 at the UN Headquarters in New York where the celebrations still take place annually, and from 2004 mostly in Bangkok, with an interruption of two years in Vietnam and one year in Sri Lanka. The coming together of the Buddhists from all over the world has led to the establishment of the International Council for the Day of Vesak, now with the special consultative status at the United Economic and Social Council.
